Last week music fans packed a Virgina Beach amphitheater and enjoyed the premiere of the Maroon 5/Counting Crows concert. This dynamic duo, along with guest Sara Bareilles, put on a show appealing to both young and old, a show that should not to be missed.

Sara Bareilles – You’ve heard the song on the radio as well as in the Rhapsody commercials (“Love Song”), but in person her voice, described as “soul, rock, jazz and pop” by Mark Adams of Popmatters.com, her vibrant lyrics and professional piano playing were even better than on the radio.

Maroon 5 – They played the longest set, which was fine by me. Again, sounding even better than their recordings, their session was full of the songs that everyone knows. Everyone was singing and dancing along with Adam Levine and the rest of the band. Their catchy playlist was dotted with mellow moments creating a smooth atmosphere on a sticky Virginia Beach night. With one minor exception, the fact that it seemed to take forever to set up their equipment, this was one of the best shows I’ve seen.

Counting Crows – Again, it took a little long to set the stage, but it was worth the wait. All at once, their set lit up and transformed into the front of a castle when Adam Duritz, David Bryson, Dan Vickrey, David Immerglück, Charlie Gillingham, Jim Bogios, and Millard Powers walked on stage.

The castle set piece illuminated with different themes each time a new song began. They did a well balanced mixture of old, new and the classics like “Long December”, which had Duritz playing the piano and “Mr. Jones”. Again, no one could keep seated as the captivating Duritz theatrically acted out the band’s songs.
