This talented actress made her theatrical debut opposite Dame Judi Dench in âThe Royal Familyâ. Fans recognize her most from her breakthrough role as the manipulative yet lovable Emily in âThe Devil Wears Pradaâ opposite Meryl Streep. I caught up with the Brit Beauty at last year’s Hollywood Life Magazine’s “Breakthrough of the Year” Awards.
Kristen Aldridge: Your performance in âThe Devil Wears Pradaâ was absolutely amazingâŠI heard after your first scene in the movie, Meryl Streep said, âEmily you canât steal the movie, you can only have a carbon copy of it!â Is that true?
Emily Blunt: Yes, thatâs true!
Kristen Aldridge: What was it like working with her?
Emily Blunt: It was amazing, sheâs so frighteningly good, everyone would love to be able to do what she does, but I donât know if anyone could. Even if they knew what she does, they wouldnât be able to execute like she does, there is no one like her! It was a huge thing and sheâs incredibly committed to every aspect of creating a role, and that was exciting to see after all those years that she still has commitments â she doesnât rely on the name, you know? Itâs amazing to see.
Kristen Aldridge: Now I heard you actually convinced the director, David Frankel, that your character should be British, not American?
Emily Blunt: I did. I wasnât forceful about it, I just thought it would be funnier, and he liked it so he pushed for it as well, it was really cool.
Kristen Aldridge: Did you and Stanley Tucci have a competition to see who could be the most over the top? And you won!
Emily Blunt: Completely, I so won! And he knows it as well, he wonât admit it but he knows I won.
Kristen Aldridge: Tell me about âCharlie Wilsonâs Warâ.
Emily Blunt: Yes, itâs a Mike Nichols film with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. Iâm also going to be starting on an independent film with Amy Adams and Alan Arkin. Iâm really excited about it, I play a pothead, very removed from anything Iâve ever done so Iâm just really excited.
