Maybe you’ve seen the trailers, maybe you haven’t. The film “The Express” (out October 10) chronicles the story of college football star Ernie Davis, the first black recipient of the Heisman Trophy and unlikely symbol of the civil rights movement while playing for Syracuse University in the early 1960s.

This story has all the makings of a classic football movie. “The Express” packs the inspiration of “Invincible”, “Rudy”, and “Remember the Titans” along with the tragedy of “Brian’s Song”, “We Are Marshall”, and “Friday Night Lights”. Ernie Davis never made it to the National Football League. Like Brian Piccolo, his life was cut short too early by leukemia.
Ernie’s heroic story is sure to inspire despite its tragedy and that’s the formula which made those six aforementioned movies among the greatest football movies of all-time. If you combine all those ingredients, you truly have something special. “The Express” stars Clancy Brown as Ernie Davis and Dennis Quaid as his coach. Football lovers get your popcorn ready.
