The latest comedy from the always kooky Jim Carrey is “Yes Man,” a movie adaptation of a Danny Wallace novel. “Man” is certainly a charming, but predictable movie about opening up life and letting opportunity in by not saying “No” and just saying … you know, instead.

The Good:
- Jim Carrey – Carl (Carrey) hasn’t been able to get it together since his divorce and his friends are becoming fed up with the constant “no’s” and excuses. But Carl realizes there’s still joy in life once he starts saying “yes” and sees the opportunities that are coming about. I think “Man” is age appropriate for Carrey. He’s still able to show his unique comedic ways but also able to show that he can actually act and not just with funny voices. He’s not Ace Ventura or Dumb and Dumber any more.
- The Plot – Some are saying “Man” is a reincarnation of “Liar, Liar.” The stories are kind of similar, but I think that’s missing the point. “Man” is uncomplicated and relatable. Carl doesn’t miraculously win the lottery by saying “Yes” or get a hot wife and super cool stuff. Instead he helps people, travels to Nebraska, learns to fly a plane and reconnects with friends.
The Bad:
- It’s a little long.
- Zooey Deschanel should have been in it more.
- It’s kinda’ predictable. Still endearing, but no surprise ending by any means.
In The End:
I say “Yes” to “Yes Man.” The positive outlook is refreshing during these times of political craziness and onslaught of Nazi related movies. Jim Carrey is funny and warm and Zooey Deschanel is adorable. It’s a nice, lighthearted comedy.
