For anyone that has doubts about L.A.’s theatre scene, I invite them to experience one of the best sketch shows in the city, ‘Newstradamus’.
Put together as the culmination project of the ensemble’s training at The Second City, Newstradamus is anything but a student show. The material captures the zeitgeist perfectly with entertaining transitions from scene to scene. The cast playfully makes fun of the idea of the pending doom circling the inevitable “end of the world” in 2010 and the pandemonium that ensues when overly dramatic and all-too-sensitive Californians are forced to deal with the mundane details of everyday life.
From beginning to end, this 50-minute sketch show is loaded with cleverly spun answers to questions like “Are you smarter than an immigrant?”. Another scene that I particularly enjoyed was a poetry slam that sums up all the good and bad feelings you may have about living in Los Angeles.
Like every great sketch show to come out of The Second City, the show even includes an original song and although the show was written over the past several months, it remains very fresh and up-to-date.
The shows cast is Carrie Weisberg, Amanda Polick, Jason McNichols, Kyle McGrath, Angie Light, Stevens Gaston, Jamie Fluet, Lisa Benedict and Chad Biagini, all of whom are hilarious. Their director, Frank Caeti, is a Second City Mainstage Alum and former MADtv cast member. As of now, the show is scheduled to run every Sunday night at 8pm through August 22, but will soon be moving on to festivals and other theatres.
Second City is located at 6560 Hollywood Blvd. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased with cash at the box office or in advance at www.etix.com. I highly recommend purchasing the tickets online as the show is in its final weeks and is sure to sell out quickly. For more information, you can call the office (323) 464.8542 or visit www.secondcity.com
