New York Fashion Week is off to a great start, so get ready for a review of this past weekend’s extravaganzas, as well as what to expect for the rest of fashion week.
Â
On Thursday, New York Fashion Week kicked off at a new location for the first time in 17 years — say good-bye to Bryant Park, hello to Lincoln Center. Â Located in the Upper West Side, it created the ambience of the Metropolitan Opera House.
Not only is it a new location for this year’s fashion extravaganza, but with some revamping it created a much more pleasure-filled experience instead of previous years where havoc took place everywhere you looked.
Some of the designers who will be walking their spring 2011 collections down the runway include Christian Siriano, Charlotte Ronson, Derek Lam, Max Azria, Narcisco Rodriguez, Michael Kors, Anna Sui, Tommy Hilfiger, Betsey Johnson, Tory Burch, Elie Tahari and Rebecca Minkoff.
It’s definitely a jam-packed week — there will be more than 90 different designers showing off their 2011 collections.
On Friday came my personal favorite – Fashion Night Out. Â It’s only in its second year and has already become one of the most popular nights of Fashion Week. Â This event is responsible for marking the start of Fall Fashion Week, as well as turning hundreds of retail stores throughout the city (and all over the world) into an incredible party.
All this fun and fashion is brought to you by influential Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue.  So you can get a feel for how amazing Fashion’s Night Out really is, imagine walking down the busy streets of NYC bumping shoulders with designers like Stella McCartney, the Olsen Twins, and Diane Von Furstenburg.
Everywhere you look, masses of people dressed in tip-top-designer labels head-to-toe line up outside stores waiting to get their turn inside. It is by far the most stylish and spectacular street party you have ever seen.
If you’re lucky, you may even get the opportunity to meet some of your favorite A-listers as they join in on the festivities. Making appearances on Friday night during Fashion’s Night Out were Mary J. Blige, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kimora Lee Simmons, Jennifer Lopez and model Erin Wasson.
If you don’t have front row seats to the show (but have always dreamed about it), you can thank technology for this gift; various designers like Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta will be streaming their runway shows live on the web!
Betsey Johnson will also be giving a sneak-peak into all of the backstage preparations and craziness too – just like the televised version of the Victoria’s Secret fashion shows.
You can even catch a few runway shows on moving billboards throughout the city like Alexander Wang has chosen to do this year. And for the most aggressive approach yet, Burberry will be turning their show into an interactive experience even if you’re in another country.
Burberry is offering up the ability to buy their designs as the model struts down the runway and purchase it in one click of a button, before the model even does a wardrobe change! How cool. This will all be happening during their live web show in London.
The fashion industry is no longer catering to the upper-class, A-listers and fashion editors…now Fashion Week can become more accessible to all of us!
