The Latest Spa Craze: Fish that Eat Dead Skin for Breakfast4 Comments

Today I had a very fishy day…literally.   First, I had a wonderful lunch at E+O in London, my favorite Pan-Asian spot. (www.eando.com)

I ate the yummy Chili Squid with some equally yummy Black Cod. My godmother Victoria and my mummy both treated me to this lovely lunch. But it was after our lunch that was really out-of-the-ordinary, and truly…yes, even more fishy.

After our lunch, I went to get the dead skin eaten off my feet, by dozens of little fishies.  And no, I’m not joking.

My mummy had told me of this new style foot treatment shop that had opened on the same street she has her jewelry store in Kensington (www.manguette.com). It sounded so gross, yet so intriguing…so we decided to go together.

Here’s what to expect:

First, they wash your feet with freezing water to increase circulation.  After you sit on a very comfy leather seat and immerse your feet in a tank full of fish.

I felt like I was in a James Bond movie (you know, the kind of movie when they suddenly press a button and drop you down into shark-infested water).   Ok, so these fish weren’t as big as sharks…but it was a pretty unusual feeling to say the least.

There were too many fish to count, and they all swarmed around my feet like mad.  It felt very strange at first, but admittedly I kinda liked it. The fish seemed to love it, and after all – you know the saying “if it’s working for you it’s working for me!”  It feels like little bubbles hitting your feet and then after 10 minutes, it starts to feel like light pins and needles.

The fish worked their way all under my feet.  Around the arch, under the heel and between my toes.  Between the toes tickled like crazy…and if you’re courageous enough to try this, will probably make you giggle too.

The salon offered complimentary green tea and even had Ipads available to browse the net or play with apps.   With extra-special things like that, it makes me know the people who own the place have really put some thought into it.   I had my mama with me the whole time, so while my feet were getting eaten for breakfast, we chatted and I read some of my book “Way of the Peaceful Warrior.”

After about 20 minutes of foot nibbling, they dry your feet and take you to another seat to give you a 15-minute foot massage.  This totally topped off the whole experience. It was really fun and I definitely enjoyed it, but I doubt I’d do it monthly.  I recommend this treatment once or twice a year – especially to change up the usual pedicure routine.  Your feet will feel softer, and less like a cheese grater (at least that’s how mine felt before I arrived).

Truthfully, mine was a bit pricey.  Expect up to 45 pounds (which translates to around 80 bucks).   If you need to do some more research, here’s an interesting article on the benefits of fish pedicures:  http://hubpages.com/hub/doctorfishpedicure.   The fish spa I visited was in London, England — so put it on your “to do list” if you plan on visiting in the future.  You can check out www.aquasheko.co.uk/ for all details on the spa.

Fortunately, there are a few locations in the US as well: http://www.doctorfishmassage.com/location/ or you can just google “Doctor Fish Pedicure” to find a location near you.

Happy fish hunting (and eating)!
