Hailed as the “Ivory Queen of Soul” and known best for songs like, “Squarebiz,” and “Fire and Desire,” the music world recently suffered the loss of songstress, Teena Marie. She passed away suddenly on December 26.
As a child, I remember frequently hearing Teena Marie songs playing on Top 40 radio stations. It wasn’t a family road trip unless you heard ”Starchild” streaming from a fuzzy FM frequency or “Lovergirl” blaring from the tape deck.
Singing along to Lady T made lengthy car rides bearable.
And while my generation appreciates Teena Marie simply for her genius musical giftedness, the previous generation embraces her for breaking racial barriers by becoming the first, non-black artist signed to the revered Motown label.
For subsequent generations, Teena Marie will be respected as a versatile, soulful singer who helped pioneer the urban, rhythm and blues sound.
Teena Marie’s star will forever shine as one of R&B’s most unique and influential voices.
