Maybe I went into the theater with my expectations too high, but I really thought the Farrelly brothers and Owen Wilson were going to deliver! I left the theater not just disappointed, but thoroughly grossed out!
Veteran funny man Owen Wilson and SNL’s Jason Sudeikis play a couple of married suburbanites who often get caught lusting after younger, more attractive women. Their wives, Jenna Fischer and Christina Applegate, respectively, give them a “Hall Pass”; a week off from marriage to act accordingly. Therein (supposedly) lies the humor; but the movie turns to gross-out humor instead.
There’s a lot of, well, what my Mom would call “toilet humor” in “Hall Pass.” Really gross. There were some really funny moments, and some lines you and your friends will adopt and say to each other over and over again; but it wasn’t enough to save “Hall Pass” from being a movie made for high school boys.
There was something great about Owen Wilson playing a suburban dad, and actually looking the part in oversize pleated khakis and an appropriate haircut (no more beach bum hair, finally!) Jenna Fischer and Christina Applegate were perfectly cast in their roles and actually managed to bring some humor of their own as well. There just wasn’t enough of the funny stuff, and there was too much of the potty stuff.
One surprise was a hilarious performance by a Seth Green-esque character Brent, an anger management-challenged barista at the local coffee house. Brent also moonlights as a DJ, and has a promiscuous mother! Keep an eye out for actor Derek Waters – I think his career will blow up soon!
I have to say, pass on “Hall Pass.” The humor is so naughty, this movie needs to be sent back to detention!
