A Better “Arthur” Than Expected0 Comments

Never has a movie role been more perfect for a man than Russel Brand as “Arthur,” and never have I liked a remake – until now!  Read on for why!

Amazing casting and wonderful performances really made this “Arthur” into a perfect re-telling.  Russel Brand was flawless as the wealthy playboy with a drinking problem and a heart of gold; Helen Mirren was perfectly sharp as a harsh nanny;  Jennifer Garner was fun as a bad girl for once; and Greta Gerwig shined as the very lovable love interest.

If you don’t know anything about the story, here’s the quick version:  Arthur(Russel Brand) is a hard-partying billionaire who never grew up.  He still employs his childhood nanny Hobson (Helen Mirren) as an all-purpose maternal substitute for his own cold mother, who is forcing him to marry social-climber Susan (Jennifer Garner) or lose his fortune.  It’s a tricky trail to the altar as Arthur falls in love with street-wise Naomi (Greta Gerwig).

I really enjoyed “Arthur” and I think you should go see it!  It’s a LOT of screen time with Russel Brand, but he was brilliant.  It’s the role he was born to play!  The film is very funny, but there are plenty of touching scenes as well.  And I really enjoyed Greta Gerwig as Naomi; she’s a breath of fresh air in a cast of very familiar faces.

Being a remake, I wasn’t expecting much but was pleasantly surprised that I liked it more than the original from thirty years ago.  I give a lot of credit to Russel Brand for making this version his own, and really making a dynamic and likeable character out of Arthur.  I also liked Greta Gerwig as Naomi much better than Liza Minelli as Linda in the original, (but don’t tell Liza!)

One thing that was missing for me was the iconic “Arthur’s Theme”…you know you know it!  “If you get caught between the moon and New York City…”  I did notice the incorporation of the melody in a sweet date scene that took place in Grand Central with Arthur and Naomi, as well as a cover of it during the credits.

Is this new “Arthur” a must or a miss?  A definite must!
