On June 24, New York lawmakers voted to legalize same-sex marriage, making New York the largest state to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed.

The marriage bill was approved 33 to 29 in a Senate chamber. Four members of the Republican majority and all but one Democrat in the Senate joined to support the measure. The celebrity twitter world is all abuzz!

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signing the bill

Neil Patrick Harris immediately took to his twitter, writing, “It PASSED. Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A historic night!”

NPH had been closely following the bill before the news even broke, hoping for positive results. Prior to the vote, he tweeted, “I’d sure love to get married. Please, NY Senate, vote in favor of marriage equality today. My family would really appreciate it.”

Neil Patric Harris, David Burtka

Neil’s longtime boyfriend, David Burtka, tweeted his own personal good news, writing, “I’ve already [proposed], he said yes! Thank god!” Neil then confirmed that the couple had proposed to each other five years ago, and have been wearing engagement rings ever since. However, they were just “waiting for an available date.”
