Hello lovelies! The weather here in L.A. and around most of the world is heating up. Some days are overcast and windy of course, but this is a critical time for your skin and body. My biggest concern is because when it’s cloudy and windy, we don’t alway feel hot — but the clouds are actually concentrating the UV rays and making them stronger.

Now I don’t need to remind you all about skin cancer and skin aging (most of our moms did that enough for us) so here are some simple steps to be prepped for the heat:
DRINK MORE WATER
The hotter it gets, the more you sweat. And the more you sweat, the more water you’re releasing from your body. To prevent dehydration, I would suggest upping your water intake by three glasses a day. I personally crave cold water in the Summer and shy away from water in the Winter — which is why I always wondered why I feel better in the Summer!

It’s not just the vitamin D that makes you feel good. Water keeps you hydrated and makes your insides feel amazing. Skin is also more subtle and you don’t need to put two rounds of body lotion on. I highly recommend a Brita Filter, it turns tap water into refreshing filtered water, is very cost effective and they even have portable reusable Brita filter bottles. PROTECT YOUR SKIN
I have a favorite sunblock method — it smells great and is so easy to apply! I’ve got brown skin so any sort of sunshine makes me turn a shade darker in about five minutes, that’s no joke. I love getting a tan, but L.A. tanning is usually when I’m driving with my arm out the car, or running errands in shorts only to come home and have crazy tan lines.
I also hate putting sunscreen on. I don’t like the consistency and the rubbing it all in takes so much time. Also, I find that the higher the sunblock, the thinker the cream, and the harder it is to blend in. Plus, it always leaves a white residue.
So, my marvelous solution? ”Banana Boat Sport Performance Active Max Protect” which comes in a clear ultramist spray. I got SPF 110 but they go lower. I love this product! I get dressed first in the morning and then spray all of my skin showing. It’s a clear mist with no need to rub in, it just sets. It’s also not greasy and smells so delicious. I keep one handy in my car, as well.
My only warning with sunblocks is that even though it might have a high SPF number, it doesn’t mean you should not re-apply often. The higher number can be misleading and some people will apply less of it and stay out in sun longer. Always re-apply often because too much sun exposure is never good.
WIPE AWAY THE DIRT
As soon as the heat kicks in, so do the sweaty hands and face. Just think about how much more dirt you are attracting with a nice moist layer of sweat to incubate it! In the Summer, the same amount of dust that’s on your car door and in the air is going to be on your face. And nothing makes that worse than your damp hands touching your face, sealing in the dust.
Let me give you a visual: I leave work, it’s boiling outside, I get to my car with sweaty hands, open my car door and all the dust on the door transfers onto my moist palms. I then enter my car (note that it’s been sitting in the car park all day in the sun so it is beyond caliente in there!) I then reach for my face to itch something or wipe off the sweat accumulating…thus adding all that dirt onto my skin!

Everyone does it at some point or another. Clogged pours with gross dirt is not a good combo. This is where wet wipes always come in handy. My preferred are “Johnson Baby Wipes” (find them at your local drug store – different size packs are available). I love them because they are perfect for my glove compartment. They are made of course for wiping baby poo, so they happen to also do a great job at getting dirt off your face.

The wipes make for a quick feminine fresh up, wiping your steering wheel, or if you’re like me, you stop at a store and get freshly cut fruit which you then get all over your steering wheel and face while driving. I also LOVE “Seventh Generation Baby Wipes” because they are chlorine free and just good for the environment, so definitely worth the few extra bucks. They sell them at Whole Foods or http://www.amazon.com.
Well, there you have it! Those are my three starter tips. I’ll have three more coming up in the next few weeks!
