Though Hollywood tries to keep our focus guided towards the young, beautiful actresses they churn out, “Our Idiot Brother,” the darling indie centered around Paul Rudd’s character, proves that formula is unnecessary.  I had been dying to see this film since it was a hit at Sundance, and it was worth the wait!  Read on for why!

Although the stunning team of Zooey Deschanel, Elizabeth Banks, Emily Mortimer and Rashida Jones are a quartet of knock-outs, this sentimental flick will draw you back to Paul Rudd’s character everytime.  Ned, an idealist and eternal optimist, finds that his hippie, free-wheeling ways don’t always yield the results intended.

After doing time for accidentally selling marijuana to a uniformed police officer, (did I mention he’s a bit of a hippie?  With a dog named Willy Nelson?), the organic farmer comes back to the home he shared with his girlfriend and finds he’s no longer welcome there, and out of a job.  It’s then that Ned reaches out to family for help.

Ned has the best of intentions and a heart of gold, but finds himself unwelcome once his honesty puts a wedge between him and each of his three sisters.  The fourth lady, who isn’t a sister?  That’s Rashida Jones, who plays Cindy, the lesbian lover of sister Natalie, (Zooey Deschanel).   But just as everything has fallen apart for everyone does the family really come together.

I don’t want to give away any more, because I want you to enjoy (no, LOVE!) this movie for yourself!  You’ll walk away with a buzz of well-being, and stoked to buy the soundtrack!  It’s the perfect blend of songs to make you emote along with the film, and remind you to look for that old Phish CD you misplaced.  Paul Rudd really brings an amazing characer to life, and I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard at a movie!  But truly, go see this movie; I haven’t loved one this much in a looong time!
