The Oscars are synonymous with big budget campaigns for a coveted nomination, but films can also attract Academy attention through the cast (remember Melissa Leo’s 2011 run for Best Supporting Actress).
Actress Sally Kirkland knows about generating excitement for a film, which resulted in her Golden Globe Award and Best Actress Oscar nomination for 1987’s ‘Anna.’ This year she co-stars in “African Chelsea,” which is now eligible for an Oscar nomination for Live Action Short.

“I had a wonderful time acting in ‘African Chelsea’ and it’s a great film. The look of it – the style – is really something special. When I was in Cannes with ‘Anna’ I did everything I could for the movie because I loved it so much. I hung posters! I grabbed Rex Reed by the arm in an elevator and said he had to come see my film,” says Kirkland. “Later he announced at a dinner party that he had just seen the best performance of the festival – me as ‘Anna’ – and that began my Oscar campaign. I’d love ‘African Chelsea’ to get nominated this year.”

The film follows an exotic dancer as she struggles to survive in Hollywood and stars Corinne Becker, Sally Kirkland, Jilon Van Over and Tosa Ogbaghado, and is written and directed by Emmy nominee Brent Roske.
Nominations for the 2012 Oscars will be announced Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 5:30 a.m. PT, from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. For more information about the live action short, check out africanchelsea.com, and check out a preview, below!
