In lieu of Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, celebs are increasing awareness by revealing their personal struggles with the disease, emphasizing the importance of early detection, and sharing details of their diagnoses and treatments.

E! News co-host, Giuliana Rancic was caught by surprise when she was diagnosed with early stages breast cancer just weeks ago. In efforts to get pregnant by undergoing another round of in-vitro fertilization, Giuliana’s doctor discovered a tumor during a mammogram. At the young age of 36, the TV host was shocked when she heard the news, especially considering she has no family history of the disease.
Giuliana shared her story on the Today Show, telling Ann Curry that she initially wanted to wait until she was 40 to have a mammogram, and argued against the procedure when her doctor suggested it. Because of the early detection, Giuliana says her prognosis is good.

Earlier this month, she underwent a double lumpectomy, having cancerous growths in both breasts removed. Doctors also removed lymph nodes that may have been affected. She is due to begin six weeks of radiation soon. And while she remains positive through her treatment by keeping her faith in the “master plan”, Giuliana’s message to all women is to get tested early.

Meanwhile, comedian Wanda Sykes is also speaking out about her diagnosis, and her drastic approach. The comedian says it didn’t take her long to decide to have both of her breasts removed. She tells PEOPLE Magazine, “I just wanted the best odds…I made my decision because I love life.”

After having a breast reduction in February, the 47-year-old was diagnosed with DCIS [ductal carcinoma in situ], a noninvasive type of breast cancer. “My first thought was, ‘Really? Me, breast cancer?’ I just couldn’t believe it,” Wanda says. “But I knew this was doable.”
Wanda underwent a bilateral mastectomy in August, and returned to her stand-up comedy tour just a month later. She credits her speedy recovery to the outpour of support from her friends and family, including her wife, Alex, and their 2-year-old twins, Lucas and Olivia.

Wanda adds that her twins were a big part of her decision, telling the magazine, “We never hid anything from the kids. They were a huge part of my decision because I wanted to be around for them. I feel whole again, I really do. I’ve told them, ‘Mommy’s boo-boo is much better now.’”
