…But We’re Sure He Went Out in Style (The Death of a Noted Fashion Critic)

By Judith Brown | October 21, 2008

Simply known as “Mr. Blackwell,” the fashion critic died on Sunday, Oct 19, 2008 from an intestinal infection. What began as a humdrum rant in 1960, his noted annual Worst-Dressed List soon became a widely-anticipated annual media blitz.

Pulling no punches (none whatsoever!), Blackwell was never intimidated by the famous (Barbra Streisand, Meryl Streep, Cher), the infamous (Madonna, Sharon Stone, Camilla Parker-Bowles) and all those in-between (Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan) to name just a few.

In the end it would seem that every one in Hollywood actually TRIED to make the list. How else could you explain some of the hideous styles that Hollywood’s (supposedly) elite strut on the red carpet? What follows are some of Blackwell’s scalding verbal reprimands. See if you can guess which starlet drew these creative criticisms. (Answers below.)

1) A dazzling singer who puts good taste through the wardrobe wringer.

2) From adorable to deplorable.

3) A Hells Angel escapee who invaded the Ziegfeld Follies on a rainy night.

4) The Bare-Bottomed Bore of Babylon.

5) An over-the-hill Cruella DeVille.

6) She looks like a masculine Bride of Frankenstein

7) Her bra-topped collection of Madonna rejects are pure fashion overkill.

8) She looks like a gypsy abandoned by a caravan.

9) The Duchess of Dowdy.

10) She dances in the dark — and dresses there, too.

11) Packs all the glamour of an old, worn-out sneaker.

Answers:

1 = Christina Aguilera

2 = Lindsay Lohan

3 = Ann Margret

4 = Madonna

5 = Sharon Stone

6 = Barbra Streisand

7 = Britney Spears

8 = Meryl Streep

Who’s the Biggest Giver?

By Tiffany Wilbert | September 14, 2008

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie rank high on The Giving Back Fund’s list of the 30 Most Generous Celebrities.  Intended to encourage the general public to give to charitable organizations, the list ranks the best givers based on public records and donations made in 2007.

The full article was published in the Sept. 14 issue of Parade.

Topping the list was Oprah Winfrey who donated $50.2 million to causes including her Foundation and Angel Network.  Both help in aiding education, health care, and advocacy for women and children around the world.

Next in line, placing in the top five include: musician Herb Alpert with $13 million; Barbra Streisand with $11 million; Paul Newman with $10 million; and Mel Gibson with $9.9 million.

Celebrity couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie ranked sixth, donating $8.4 million to their Jolie-Pitt Foundation which helps support New Orleans reconstruction, refugee aid, and cross-cultural understanding.

“Some stars set a bad example from time to time, so it’s nice to celebrate those who are doing good work,” Parade editor Janice Kaplan told Us Weekly.

“We can’t all give $50 million like Oprah, but she makes us understand that giving back matters,” Kaplan added.
