Oscar Fashion: Positively Best and Worst Gowns

By Hilary Dickinson | March 1, 2009

The Belles of the Ball

Most improved: After her gypsy-inspired ensemble at the Golden Globes and peach bridesmaid dress at the SAG Awards, Oscar nominee Marisa Tomei finally got it right with her one-shoulder silver, pleated Versace gown.

5. Amy Adams: Sure the Oscar nominee’s Fred Leighton necklace was huge, but it was stunning with 39 carats of diamonds and 630 carats of sapphires, emeralds and rubies. While it could have matched a little better, it still didn’t take away from her red Carolina Herrera gown. The draping fabric in the front and black stitching across the bust and down her back made for some exquisite details.

4. Taraji P. Henson: The best actress nominee didn’t look anything like her frumpy alter ego in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” in her delicately pleated, fitted champagne gown. Her big diamond necklace and train added extra elegance to the Roberto Cavalli gown without overpowering her.

3. Reese Witherspoon: The rich blue and black colors of the former Oscar winner’s Rodarte gown made for a striking contrast. Adding to the beautiful ensemble are the sparkles on the bust area and the draping black fabric.

2. Alicia Keys: We’re not sure why the Grammy-winning singer was at the Oscars, but she sure showed those movie stars how it’s done with her elegant yet young fuchsia Giorgio Armani Prive gown.

1. Natalie Portman: This beautiful actress was a lovely fresh breath of air in her Rodarte orchid-colored gown, which set her far apart from the many other metallic and black gowns on the red carpet. It fit her perfectly, and her simple silver bracelet, rings, and earrings were just enough.

Better luck next year

Least Improved: The “Slumdog Millionaire” beauty turned heads on the red carpet at the Golden Globes with her strapless mustard slightly ruffled gown and at the SAG Awards with her purple whimsical gown (although she could have lost the draped scarf). Yet, her blue John Galliano gown at the Oscars didn’t look like a million bucks with the laced one sleeve.

5. Melissa Leo.  The Oscar nominee hasn’t had a lot of practice on the red carpet, but she could have used some pointers when it came to her frumpy brown dress with the oddly placed brooches pinned to her cap sleeves. A vibrant gown color and a more polished hair style could have done wonders.

4. Miley Cyrus: The huge volcano-looking skirt on her Zuhair Murad silk tulle gown was just too overpowering for the petite 16-year-old.

3. Beyonce: Hugh Jackman’s dancing partner should have taken a cue from fellow singer, Alicia Keys when picking out a gown. The House of Dereon dress was yet another mermaid-style that we’ve come to see her wear again and again; but, the biggest crime was the gold leaf design. It’s one thing to want an Oscar, but you shouldn’t match it.

2. Sarah Jessica Parker: Her alter ego, Carrie Bradshaw, is a fashionista, but this Dior Couture gown would have been better off on Barbie with its belt and overly puffy skirt.

1. Jessica Biel: You’d think Justin Timberlake could give his girlfriend better fashion tips. It looked like she had some extra fabric left over, so she just tucked it right back into her champagne Prada gown. The stiff round bottom of the gown was no hit either, but at least it hid her black close-toed shoes.

Positively People Pets Will Have Your Keyboards Wagging

By Hilary Dickinson | February 23, 2009

Can’t get enough of celebrities? Are you a pet-lover? Then you’ll love peoplepets.com as much as Mickey Rourke loves his dogs. Go visit this site.

The new Web site from People magazine is a one-stop site for breaking news, features, photos, pet fashion and silly animal videos. You won’t even have to go to You-Tube anymore for your funny animal fix because peoplepets.com gathers them all right here.

The news section provides breaking pet news like the passing of Rourke’s beloved Chihuahua; but, if you’re already a celebrity news aficionado, you probably won’t find anything here you don’t already know.

The pet features, however, are both interesting and unique. Where else are you going to find photo slideshows of “100 Years of Famous Dogs,” and “Top 10 Pet Moments of 2008.”

The pet fashions are one of the highlights of the Web site with its photos of pets modeling the practical (an absorbent towel), the interesting (a waterproof dog collar), and the fancy (a gold rhinestone trench coat). Details on the cost and where to find the items are helpful, and the price ranges cover every economic bracket from the affordable raincoat at Wal-Mart for $6.97 - $9.97 to the more expensive camo base coat at Paw Palace Online for $42.99.

Don’t forget this Web site is from People magazine. Those familiar with the magazine will enjoy “Today’s Walk of Fame,” which is like Star Tracks only all the celebrity spottings include their furry friends.

While the majority of the Web site is devoted to celebrities and pets, there’s also photos of real-life pets, behind-the-scenes footage of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, and even videos of foxes jumping on a trampoline.

Written in a loose, informal tone, People Pets is also very user-friendly. You can post comments, enter a caption contest for funny pet pictures, and upload cute pictures of your own pet.

So even if you won’t ever be on the same Web site as Paris Hilton, who knows? Maybe your pooch will have its picture next to Hilton’s Tinkerbell.

Positively Hottest Celebrity Trends of 2008

By Randi Niklekaj | January 1, 2009

With 2009 here - what a better time to reminisce over 2008’s big celeb trends?

These are not your mother’s pearls. Double Strand Pearls made a statement in 2008, adding a classic piece to edgy looks like Ashlee Simpson, Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow.

She’s all legs. Though some of us might run screaming in the other direction from wearing skin tight leggings- Not Rihanna, Heidi Klum and Ashley Olson. These fashionistas show off their good fortune in shiny, latex leggings that leave hardly anything to the imagination.

Navy Dresses. Always sleek and sophisticated, Anne Hathaway, Reese Witherspoon and Claire Danes sparkle in these sapphire dresses.

I love scarves, pashminas and this trend! Heidi Montag, Jennifer Aniston, Eva Longoria Parker amped up the basic tote with fun and useful patterned scarves. Take note 2009-this trend is to stay!

Gladiator heels were a big 2008 trend.  Ashley Olsen, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Heidi Klum wear a stylish of the strappy heel.

Blazers over dresses offered a chic and stylish way to cover up flirty dresses.  Julianne Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow and Whitney Port still look cool and fashionable in their fitted blazers.

Positively Provoking Celebrity Style

By Randi Niklekaj | December 5, 2008

Celebrities always push fashion buttons. But, would you wear these celeb trends?

It’s getting colder, but we just can’t let go of the hot summer and warm fall. Katie Holmes, Lily Allen and Kate Moss extend the warmer season pairing jean shorts with black tights. A little daring and super cute!

If you say no way-it’s too cold! What about fur jackets? Debra Messing, Becki Newton and Vanessa Hudgens stay warm in their retro furry chubbies.

I love this look-but do you? Piped blazers have made a comeback. The look is solid, simple and clean. Selena Gomez, Rachel Bilson and Nicky Hilton have all brought preppy back pairing with skinny trousers and jeans.

Dare to bare! Shear dresses, worn by Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and Sarah Paulson are sexy and soft. The long sleeves make the dresses a great fall choice!

What about thigh high socks? Heidi Montag, Vanessa Hudgens and Caridee English make a statement in their school-girl inspired frocks.

By Judith Brown | November 17, 2008

Though she is still in mourning over the tragic deaths of her mother, brother and nephew, Jennifer Hudson is moving forward with her life. Featured in a hopeful and cheery Gap campaign, some might feel the campaign is ill-timed but Gap assured reporters Hudson approved the use of her image – though she had the option to drop out of the campaign following her personal tragedy.

The ad includes the tagline, “Shine Your Own Star,” and will be shown in magazines, newspapers, and billboards in NY and Los Angeles. Hudson is one of several celebrities who participated in the new campaign, which includes Mary-Louise Parker, Milla Jovovich, Ashanti, Jason Bateman and his 21-month-old daughter Francesca, Rainn Wilson and many others.

Leaving on a Jet Plane…Stylishly

By Randi Niklekaj | October 24, 2008

Remember the days when going to the airport was also a fashion statement? After decades of air travel around the world that style has been reduced to sweatpants and t’s. But not for our celebrity jet-setters!

Victoria Beckham shows Americans how to fly chic. Posh channels the 1950s airport style in this Audrey Hepburn with a pixie cut, Chanel bag and fitted black and white dress.

The always sharp looking Jonas Brothers touch down in Paris, looking Euro ready in suites and ties.

In Black Orchid jeans and her luxe Cartier “Marcello” bag, Halle Berry at LAX reminds us why she was recently named the sexiest woman alive.

High school sweethearts, Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron leave Paris in a la mode with skinny jeans, black tops and hot boots.

Eva Mendes brightens up a gloomy London at Heathrow International with her sunshine yellow, dress and thigh-high boots. Sexy, stylish and so ready to fly!
