The Hollywood Foreign Press recently announced the nominees for this year’s Golden Globes airing on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. on NBC. This year’s Golden Globes has special significance because last year the winners were announced during a lackluster press conference due to the writer’s strike.
Usually, the Golden Globe nominations and winners are a good indicator of who and what will be nominated for the Academy Awards. So if you haven’t seen these movies or TV shows yet, now is your time to start checking them out.

Angelina Jolie wielded a gun in this summer’s action flick, “Wanted,” but the role also helped her get the most bang out of her buck. In The Hollywood Reporter’s list of highest-earning actresses released on Friday, Jolie came in at No. 1.
The Oscar winner, who was No. 2 last year, reportedly made $15 million for her assassin role in “Wanted” and could make $20 for the sequel.
It’s been almost 20 years since she burst onto the scene in “Pretty Woman,” but Julia Roberts proved she can still garner big money. She made the list at No. 2 for making $15 million for her upcoming film, “Duplicity.”
Other big movie stars of Robert’s caliber, however, didn’t make the cut this year. Nicole Kidman and Halle Berry are both Oscar winners like Jolie and Roberts but failed to garner a $10 million salary from any of their movies.
Last year’s highest-earning actress, Reese Witherspoon, slipped to No. 3 for earning $14 million for “Four Christmases,” which has been No. 1 at the box office for the past two weeks.
Cameron Diaz, Katherine Heigl (who made her debut on the list), Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Aniston, who made $8 million for the upcoming “Marley and Me,” rounded out the list.
Despite the power wattage from these actresses, the Y chromosome still helps to make the big bucks. Will Smith can make up to $25 million per movie and Brad Pitt can get up to $20 million.
Nevertheless, Shiloh et. al have some rich movie star parents.
He’s starred in movies with Kate Winslet, Ellen Page, Annette Bening, and now with Anne Hathaway in this weekend’s “Passengers,” but you may not yet know about Patrick Wilson.
His first big film role was playing an accused pedophile in “Hard Candy” with Page followed by “Little Children” with Winslet in which he played a philandering husband.
Before that the 35-year-old actor from the South was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in HBO’s “Angels in America” and was nominated for two Tony Awards for his work on Broadway.
“When I moved , I said the only things I wanted to do was originate the lead in a show, and if it was a musical, then do the recording, and get nominated for a Tony,” he said per Internet Movie Database. “So now that I’ve done all that, I don’t know what I’m going to do. Maybe I should dream higher.”
From the looks of his blossoming movie career, it seems he has indeed dreamed higher.
In “Passengers” he plays a mysterious plane crash survivor who gets romantically involved with the grief counselor (Hathaway) assigned to counsel the five survivors until she suspects he may have more to do with the plane crash.
Right before that he starred in last month’s “Lakeview Terrace” and next stars in the highly anticipated comic book adaptation, “Watchmen,” opening next year.
But he hasn’t given up his Broadway career. Currently he’s starring in “All My Sons” with John Lithgow, Katie Holmes and Dianne Wiest.
“I would never ‘abandon’ Broadway. I do want to expand my horizons and do more film work, but I’m interested in good roles, wherever they may be,” he said according to IMBb. “I refuse to acknowledge the gap between theater and film. I want to do both. On both coasts. So I will…unless I never get a job again, in which case I’ll go back to my first career choice: chimney sweep.”
He’s married to fellow Carnegie Mellon graduate, Dagmara Dominczyk, and two years ago they had a son, Kalin Patrick, whose initials are tattooed on Wilson’s arm.
(Channeling Anne Hathaway: RUN AS FAST AND AS FAR AS YOU CAN!) Looks like Anne Hathaway had the right idea when she kicked her ex, Raffaello Follieri, to the proverbial curb (regardless of what The Donald had to say about it).
The latest in a long line of “He did WHAT?!” moments came when Follieri sent the judge a picture of himself and the pope – in hopes of receiving a lighter sentence. It didn’t take. Maybe because the judge isn’t Catholic, or maybe because he is.
In any event not even an ‘up close and personal’ photo op alongside the pope impressed either the judge or the prosecutors on the case. And why would it? Though it might be a valuable item in the eyes of some, it pales in comparison to the millions Follieri cheated out of investors.
2008 hasn’t been particularly good for ‘Poor Anne’. First, she had to break off any connection with this creep (for obvious reasons). Then there was that Get Smart movie. Good news is things can only go up from here….
Call it “CSI: Lite” – CBS’s new drama, “The Mentalist,” gives you the familiar Who Done It? crime formula but delivers it with suave, breezy style.
That suave style is delivered by none other than eternally suave actor Simon Baker with his uber-self-assuredness and Cheshire cat grin that he brought to such roles as “Devil Wears Prada’s” dashing writer who swept away Anne Hathaway.
“The Mentalist” is the perfect vehicle for Baker who is given free reign to strut around and show off his breezy all-knowingness as a former phony TV psychic who has now joined the California Bureau of Investigation helping to solve murders.
Patrick Jane admits he’s not a psychic – he’s “just paying attention.” He simply sees what’s in plain sight staring us all right in the face.
Sitting slouched at a desk with his hand holding up his smashed cheek like a bored student in math class, Jane watches the mannerisms of a suspect being interviewed through a one-way mirror and coolly predicts “He and Allison were lovers.” Sure enough two seconds later the suspect admits, “Allison and I were lovers.”
Yet, Baker’s magic is preventing Jane from coming off as annoying or cocky. Jane is a breath of fresh air amongst his stiff and skeptical colleagues, and he wins them and the audience over with his dead-on assumptions – although the colleagues are less likely to admit it.
Jane wins the audience over because he’s super smart and has the resourcefulness of Jack Nicholson’s wily detective in “Chinatown.” Jane knows to tell the killer who draws a gun on him that he already took out the bullets and when the killer looks away to check the gun, Jane runs like hell downstairs to the awaiting investigators. Or when a psychiatrist asks him what’s keeping him up at night, Jane avoids his personal angst and instead passes off Johnny Cash’s personal story of his brother getting killed as his own.
But, “The Mentalist” isn’t all fun and games. The pilot is centered around a murder similar to those committed by notorious serial killer “Red John” who’s known for leaving smiley faces dripped in blood on the wall above the crime scene, and we learn that Jane has a personal connection to Red John.
In the final haunting scene, we see Jane return to a quiet house and curl up on an air mattress underneath a murderous red smiley face and we know that “The Mentalist” is going to give us one complex and interesting protagonist.
CBS Tuesdays at 9 p.m. Eastern
Natalie Portman kept her summer sizzle at the Venice Film Festival, People Magazine reports. She looked perfectly chic in a sashed, navy Miu Miu dress with soft curls framing her face.
Drama, drama, drama. Keira Knightley looked anything but calm in her blue, tulle-topped, strapless Alexis Mabeel dress, pulled back hair and square-toe Maschino pumps. A huge fall trend, ladies.
Moving on to sexy Charlize Theron, also in Venice. The girl commanded attention in her sleek, fuchsia Versace dress. It was expertly shaped and paired with little accessories, to keep the attention where it belonged. Beautiful and simple Roger Vivier heels finished the look.
Anne Hathaway left me breathless premiering her new flick, “Rachel Getting Married.” She totally dazzled in an elegant and glamorous, Atelier Versace gown. The detailed skirt and green compliment her shape and skin tone.
Sweetheart Reese Witherspoon looked flawless at the Avon event in Brazil. Nothing says well put together like her Navy, Sari Gueron dress with matching shoes and accessories that added a gold sparkle.
1. Cut-out booties
I know I mentioned them before. In case you were sleeping…these shoes rock. They are ladylike, but edgier and updated version of the ankle bootie. Rihanna rocks the new look.
2. Rich Colors
Fall is always toned down from the bright spring and summer looks. But this fall’s vivid colors reek sophisticated, palette in shades of purple, magenta and plum. Check out Kim Kardashian and Emily Deschanel.
3. Tuxedo Inspired Looks
No, I am not talking about the ugly man suit on woman or the 80s. The new, creative, fashionable and classic look is so for women. Men shouldn’t get to have all the fun. Check out Anne Hathaway’s Dolce & Gabbana jacket with Elise Overland leggings, Put me in a tux! Elisha Cuthbert looks stunning, sophisticated and trendy in her take on the tux.
4. Ladylike Bags
Leave the oversized totes for the beach. Polish your fall looks with a frame bag for a chic, vintage feel. This fall is about classic and traditional looks.
5. Lace
No, not your nightgown. Bags, shoes, dresses, tops- it’s all for fall ladies, so lace up! Charlize Theron shows us how it’s done, she sizzles in this Prada dress.

Alright, this one is for my trendsetters. Attention daredevils walking outside the pretty circle and teetering on the edge of fashion: If you’re looking for something different, listen up!
Skinny jeans? Check. Form fitting mini skirt? Check. Okay, now add a bright-colored jacket to make an impression. Who needs casual anyway? Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Katherine Heigl all tackle the bright jacket with dark denim and black skirt contrast. This stunning contradiction is sure to get attention.
Leather mini skirts are no longer 80s. Bring them back! Selita Ebanks, Ashley Olsen and Nicky Hilton all hopped on the trendy wagon, People Magazine said. Pair with gladiator heels and you are a force.
Business women, pay attention. It’s time to spice up the office. Wear a “short suit” like Anne Hathaway, Rihanna and Natalie Portman. Match your basic black suit jacket with a skirt or shorts, some heels and accessories and you will definitely be “fiscally responsible.”
Yellow is my favorite color. And it might become yours after you try on these jeans. Add pop and color to your ensemble with sunny yellow like Heidi Montag, Jada Pinkett Smith and Audrina Patridge. In fact you can add just about any color.
Anne Hathaway first gained widespread recognition for her role in “The Princess Diaries” opposite Julie Andrews. Moving away from family-friendly films, she had a notable role in “Brokeback Mountain” directed by Academy Award winner Ang Lee. I caught up with the bubbly star last year at Hollywood Life Magazine’s “Breakthrough of the Year Awards” where she was being honored for her performance in “The Devil Wears Prada”.
Kristen Aldridge: You look amazing tonight!
Anne Hathaway: What a warm welcome, thank you so much, you’re so sweet!
Kristen Aldridge: How does it feel to be honored tonight?
Anne Hathaway: It’s so nice, I could be at home in sweat pants eating popcorn and watching E! True Hollywood Stories so it’s nice to get dressed up and have people think I’m worth something, I don’t know.
Kristen Aldridge: You’ve already worked with so many great actors, of course Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada”, and directors Ang Lee and Garry Marshall…do you have a list of dream people you would like to work with next?
Anne Hathaway: Tim Burton! But I do have a lot of exciting things coming up so I’m very pleased with who I’m working with, but if I could add to the list of dream people, it would be Tim Burton. I think he’s an amazing visionary, so cool – and I think he’s got great hair! (laughing)
Kristen Aldridge: (laughing) What has been your favorite memory from this past year?
Anne Hathaway: In terms of professional, I went away the weekend “The Devil Wears Prada” opened. I loved the film so much that I didn’t want to jinx it, and I wanted to have a great weekend regardless. So getting the call that it had done so well the opening weekend, and I was in the South of France thinking, “I don’t think life gets any better than this!” So having once in a lifetime gifted moments from God is pretty cool!
