How’s this for a super group…Jack White of The White Stripes, Alison Mosshart of the Kills, Jack Lawrence of White’s side project Raconteurs, and Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita; United as one they call themselves The Dead Weather and their debut album, Horehound is due out in June.

The album’s producer, White, plays drums on the record (and also sings). The album was recorded in just three weeks at White’s Third-Man studio-label complex in Nashville.

Other promising releases due out this spring:

Neil Young “Fork in the Road,” on 4/7

Silversun Pickups “Swoon” 4/14

Bob Dylan “Together Through Life” 4/28

Lil Wayne “Rebirth” in May

Also in May, Green Day “21st Century Breakdown”

Eminem “Relapse” 5/18

Conor Oberst Outer South” 5/19

Mos Def “The Ecstatic” and Sonic Youth “The Eternal” 6/9

Wilco, also, will have a new album out sometime in June. Needless to say, it will be a good time for music lovers in the coming months.

Thom Yorke, Jack White In The Studio…Together

Posted on 12 Jan 2009 at 10:28am

Out of rock and roll heaven comes the news that Jack White and Thom Yorke will be collaborating musically.

Radiohead’s most recent album In Rainbows was released a little over a year ago, and their previous album Hail To The Thief was released four years before that.  In that same span of time, The White Stripes went from local Detroit favorites to worldwide sensation.

Besides his work with The White Stripes, Jack White is notable for his many collaborations, working most recently with Alicia Keys on the title theme to the latest James Bond film, Quantum Of Solace.  He has a second band, The Raconteurs (which he refuses to call a “side project” and their two recent albums and steady touring schedule support his refusal), and has worked with Beck, Mark Ronson,  Loretta Lynn (with the band that would morph into The Raconteurs) and local Detroit band Electric Six.

Thom Yorke, frontman for Radiohead, has collaborated with Björk, DJ Shadow, and electronic group Modeselektor.

While recovering from a neck injury last fall, White had the time to write “a lot.”  The duo is in the studio now, reportedly.  Can’t wait to see what sort of magic they conjure up…

Rock + R&B = 007

Posted on 26 Sep 2008 at 7:53pm

Jack White, the front half of the duo The White Stripes, and Alicia Keys, the R&B songstress, have crossed format lines.  The two recently teamed up to record the White-penned theme song to the next James Bond film, due out in November.

The song is called “Another Way To Die” and, although that sounds like the title of a Bond adventure, the movie is actually saddled with the cumbersome but unique title “Quantum Of Solace.”

The song starts with the trademark Jack White fuzzy rock guitar, but then comes a twist on the familiar Bond theme horns.  Indeed the song could be a heavy White Stripes song filtered through the Hollywood soundtrack machine, with strings, horns and eerie tinkling piano.  But Keys holds her own; she brings her soulful style into a harder arena and makes the track much richer for it.

White and Keys trade verses dealing with the spy life.   The verses were written after White read the script for the new film and was inspired to write lyrics dealing with mistrust and paranoia.

Alicia Keys Strikes Chord with 007

Joining the ranks of musical legends like Tina Turner, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon and Madonna, 11-time Grammy winning, multi-talented Alicia Keys has signed on to record the theme song to the latest Bond flick, Quantum of Solace, slated for release November 7.

The song, titled “Another Way to Die”, is the first duet of a Bond film. But no worries: Keys is used to breaking barriers with her in-your-face-styled lyrics and her “know-she-didn’t-strike-that-chord!” musicianship.

We can hardly wait for the Bond-themed collaboration between her and Jack White of the alternative rock band, The White Stripes, expected to drop October 28.
