August 5th sees the iTunes release of a new charity album, “Songs For Tibet”. The worldwide release in other formats is August 12th. The two-disc set features contributions from artists such as Sting, John Mayer, Alanis Morissette, Dave Matthews, and Rush. The proceeds go to the Art Of Peace Foundation, a pro-Tibet organization.
Some of the artists contributed new songs to the compilation and others recorded new versions of older songs.
The timing of the release coincides with the start of the Beijing Olympics on August 8th. The Chinese government has been criticized for clamping down on the free speech of foreign reporters in the country to cover the Olympics, and is particularly sensitive about coverage of issues like democracy, freedom and the Free Tibet movement.
This set is along the lines of countless other charity albums over the years, most recently and notably last year’s “Instant Karma”, Amnesty International’s collection of John Lennon covers to benefit organizations committed to improving the situation in Darfur. That set also featured an international list of artist contributors.
