Positively Perfect Holiday Music

Posted on 25 Dec 2010 at 11:00am

Why listen to ”Frosty, the Snowman” or “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” when you can enjoy holiday jingles from a post -pubescent Justin Timberlake or from a Jewish comedian-turned-singer?

I’ve shared six of my favorite holiday hits with you – all great for your post-Christmas, workout playlist or for you to play in the background while you entertain guests!

“All I Want For Christmas is YOOOOOOOU”

As a child, I memorized and belted out countless traditional hymns in a never-ending string of local Christmas play appearances. “What Child is This” and “Little Town of Bethlehem” are cherished and sacred songs, but they’re not exactly racking up the most points for most entertaining holiday songs. So when Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas album was released in ‘94, I was thrilled to know that Christmas music could actually be fun!

The best part about the Merry Christmas album is that there’s something for everyone’s listening pleasure. You can sing along to classics like “O, Holy Night,” or rock out to the upbeat “All I Want For Christmas is You.”

Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas album = the trendiest thing since Santa.

Hip Hop Holiday

If you’re a hip hop head, it’s not officially the holiday season until you’ve heard Run DMC’s, “Christmas in Hollis.”  Sporting Starter jackets, oversized gold chains, and fresh sneakers, Run, DMC, and Jam-Master Jay help make the holidays hip.

Happy Holidays from NSync

From Justin Timberlake’s frosted tips to Gary Coleman’s cameo as an elf, NSync’s “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays” video might be the cheesiest holiday video ever. But we love our boy bands, so they get a pass!

And if I had to choose a boy band from the late 90s to deliver presents to me on Christmas, I would totally choose NSync to do the job.

“A Very Special Christmas For Me…”

First recorded and made popular by Donny Hathaway, “This Christmas” is my all time favorite Christmas song. The first few bars alone can get even the most impossible Scrooge into the holiday spirit. While my affinity will always be for Mr. Hathaway’s original version, Chris Brown’s cover does this cheerful holiday song justice.

“Once Again It’s Hanukkah!”

We thought Elmo N’ Patsy’s, “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” was comedy, but that was about 17 years before Adam Sandler released his side-splitting, “Chanukah Song” series.  Some of the most humorous holiday music in recent years, in the 3 song series, Sandler pays homage to the Jewish faith while shouting out famous Jewish entertainers.

Folks, put on your yarmulkes!

Christmas Classic

Definitely have never roasted chestnuts over an open fire, but listening to Nat King Cole’s version of “The Christmas Song” makes me want to do just that! “The Christmas Song” has stood the test of time as one of the classiest, most heart-warming carols ever to be recorded.

And you have to love the charming way Nat King Cole sings the lyrics as if he’s personally telling you a Christmas story!

Have A Safe & Happy Holiday Season!

Come Back in 2011: Our Favorite Singing Divas Screaming for a Comeback

Posted on 10 Nov 2010 at 6:59pm

Whether it’s due to declining record sales or to major, life changing catastrophes, some of our favorite singing divas have gone from being chart toppers to having close brushes with becoming “has beens”. A few, though, are holding on to their A-List credibility, and making musical come backs could revive their careers.

Below is my short list of who I would love, love, LOVE to see make come backs next year!

MARIAH CAREY

Stick thin and with an unruly – but sexy – head full of curly hair, Mariah Carey sang her way onto our tape decks with classics like “Vision of Love” and “Emotions.”  Every little girl aspired to be as chic as Carey during her leotard, high-waisted jeans wearing days of “Someday.”

And “Hero” must have set the world record for most overused song at talent shows and at pageants.

The charts, though, were not as kind to Mimi in the latter part of last decade as they had previously been. E=MC² was a huge success in the States and in Canada but failed to reach platinum status Internationally as had her other albums.  Her 2009 release, Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel, was too hip hop and R&B heavy, making the album sound like a balladeer’s failed attempt to be cool.

Next for Mariah: Her second Christmas album, Merry Christmas II You, was released this week! Time for a Carey Christmas!

Why I would like to see a Mariah Carey come back: Somewhere underneath that diva-tude and those layers of maternity clothes lies a talented songstress with unparalleled song writing capabilities!

KELLY CLARKSON

Competing in and winning American Idol in 2002 propelled Kelly Clarkson to instant stardom.  With the help of the Idol machine, Clarkson’s girl-next-door-makes-it-big fairytale appealed to dreamers all over America and set the foundation for the success of her debut album. “Miss Independent” wowed us with songs like “Since You’ve Been Gone,” and hits like “Breakaway” became radio mainstays.

Though all four of Clarkson’s  albums have sold relatively well, her undeniable star power that defined her early success has faded just a bit. Currently, Clarkson is working on her 5th studio album which is due for an early 2011 release.

Why I would like to see Kelly come back: Her voice is one of the strongest female voices in the industry today, and I admire her quest to maintain her individuality in a “conform now” industry.

Next for the Texas-born cutie: A duet performance with Jason Aldean at next week’s CMAs. Looking forward to her live performance!

It’s BRITNEY!

There have been several alleged comebacks, but Britney at her best – the 12 % body fat, never missing a beat, dancing machine Britney from “Slave 4 U” days - has been eluding the industry for some time now. Indeed, there was the reasonably successfully, critically acclaimed Circus Tour.

But this Britney

pales in comparison to THIS Britney.

I’ll pass on having a piece of this version of the starlet…

…and opt instead for the “Toxic” version.

At-her-finest Britney is the one we want. THE Britney Spears is what the people really need.

Why I want to see a Spears come back: It could be monumental! Imagine how ridiculous record and concert sales will be if we get back the Brit of yesteryear!

Next for the Pop Princess: Slowly working her way back into our lives with an awesome Glee cameo, the sexy songstress is in the studio working on her next album.

Who would you like to see make a come back in 2011?  Comment below, and keep checking back for more of the latest music news from Erica Renee Davis right here on Positively Celebrity.

Mike Posner: “Cooler Than” A One-Hit-Wonder?

Posted on 05 Oct 2010 at 9:50am

While stuck in a nightmare of a traffic jam on the 405 (shocking, I know), on my radio came an extremely catchy song I had never before heard.  It was complete with that classic, synthesized sound that I love way too much (yeah, I’m obsessed with anything that sounds remotely 80’s, and no, I’m not ashamed). The beat and the hook were simple but contagious, and I found myself singing along to, while simultaneously Shazaming, Mike Posner’s “Please Don’t Go.”

I looked to my left and noticed the DHL guy nodding and smiling as he spied on my uninhibited, air-mic, jam session. So I placed my microphone back on its imaginary stand, tailgated the car in front of me, and, as LA traffic forces you to do, began pondering one of the world’s most puzzling questions:

“Do we have another one-hit-wonder on our hands?”

Considering the insane success of Posner’s “Cooler Than Me” and the fact that “Please Don’t Go” has barely skimmed the charts, I would be willing to bet my Sony Walkman (and even throw in my foam cushioned headphones) that Mr. Posner’s “Cooler Than Me” will force him to fall into this unfortunate category. Coming to that realization made me sad for him but happy to reminisce about some of my favorite one-hit-wonders of all time! Shall we? Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love” ranks high on my all time fave, one-hit-wonder list. What a fun, pop 80’s tune that, thanks to sampling from artists like Mariah Carey, has yet to reach its expiration date!

“Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” must have been one of the most annoyingly hilarious songs of the 90’s! How bold of the Crash Test Dummies to record and release this track which, surprisingly, got them a Grammy nod! Mmm hmm!

Every visual in OMC’s “How Bizarre” video is WRONG – the backup dancers’ cotton sports bras, the hula hoops, and the lead singer’s plaid sport coat. Bizarre, I know, but back in the day, you either loved this song and knew all the words or hated this song and knew all the words!

Oh, Lucy Pearl, the nerve of you to give us “Dance Tonight,” one of the best, feel-good songs of the decade and then not follow up with another equally spectacular hit.

Too bad Rich Boy hasn’t been able to match his success from “Throw Some D’s.” Whether you wanted to throw some on your car or on your chest, everyone was rapping along to this one in back in ‘06!

The common thread for one-hit-wonders is that, aside from the song, nothing else about the artist who sings it is memorable. So the answer to the million dollar question has been realized…

With Posner’s “Cooler Than Me,” we do,  in fact, have another one-hit-wonder on our hands.

Which one-hit-wonders top your list!?

Eminem Disses Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon On New Single

Posted on 25 Aug 2009 at 11:56pm

If you’re not in the know, here’s the scoop. Rapper Eminem has had an ongoing feud with Mariah Carey for denying that the two ever had a relationship. Mariah Carey fired back at Em with a single and video called ‘Obsessed’ which depicts a stalker of the singer – hinted to be Eminem.

So in a new single released by Eminem, entitled ‘Warning,’ Eminem attempts to set things straight. He threatens to reveal nude pictures and phone messages Mariah allegedly sent to him during their brief relationship. He also disses Mariah’s new husband, Nick Cannon, for having labeled his career as one that thrives on hate.

No arguments here. Eminem is clearly an artist with a lot of anger, anger that’s curiously directed only at Mickey Mouse celebrities. Ever hear Eminem diss DMX or Jay Z?

Didn’t think so. I guess in Eminem’s world everyone should care that he had a sexual encounter with Mariah and that she chose to lie about it. Aren’t there worse things to get riled up about, Em? Clearly the two artists have something in common as far as their careers lacking relevance.

I know, ouch.

Beyonce Selected to Sing for Obama’s Inauguration Night

Posted on 16 Jan 2009 at 11:05am

Beyonce will sing for Barack and Michelle Obama’s first dance on inauguration night Tuesday, The Associated Press reports.

Which song she will perform is not being disclosed by the Presidential Inaugural Committee.  “It is our hope that we can keep the song a secret until the moment,” said spokeswomen Linda Douglass.

Beyonce had expressed shortly after the presidential election that she was eager to participate in the inauguration.  “Whatever they want – if they need me to volunteer, the need me to sing, I’m there, and I’m ready,” she told a reporter.

Along with the first dance honor, Beyonce is also set to perform at Tuesday night’s Neighborhood Ball which will air on ABC.

Other stars performing along with Beyonce include her husband Jay-Z, will.i.am, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Shakira, Sting, Faith Hill, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder and Maroon 5.

Positively New Years Resolutions: Celebrity Edition

Posted on 07 Jan 2009 at 2:03pm

It’s now officially 2009, and you know what that means: New Year’s resolutions. But, we aren’t the only ones who make resolutions – celebrities do too. Most probably want to lose weight or quit smoking like most people do; but, here’s Positively Celebrity’s ideas for how celebrities can improve their lives and careers in 2009.

Expectant moms like Jennifer Garner and “Grey’s Anatomy’s” Chyler Leigh:

Name babies normal names instead of the crazy baby names of 2008 like Ashlee Simpson’s son, Bronx Mowgli, and Gwen Stefani’s son, Zuma Nesta Rock.

Screen Actors Guild members and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers:

Come to a resolution regarding DVD residuals and online video so there will not be another strike like the 100-day writer’s strike in late 2007 and early 2008 that halted production of scripted shows and brought an onslaught of tacky reality shows.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan:

Follow Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s lead in “Revolutionary Road” by reuniting one of America’s favorite on-screen couples.

Robert Pattinson and Zac Efron:

Take advantage of your fortunate successes of starring in 2008’s “Twilight” and “High School Musical 3” by not screwing up like many other young newly minted movie stars. Ahem Shia LaBeouf and Lindsay Lohan.

The “Friends” cast:

Reunite for a successful big-screen adaptation of their show like the women of “Sex and the City” did in 2008.

Shows like “Heroes” and “Grey’s Anatomy”:

Cut the convoluted and crazy storylines and remind us why we initially loved them.

Mike Myers, Al Pacino, Meg Ryan, Amy Winehouse, and Janet Jackson:

Plan a comeback for 2009. The kind of comebacks that Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke, Tom Cruise, and Britney Spears all enjoyed in 2008.

Long time couples like Fergie and Josh Duhamel, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, Amy Adams and Darren Legallo, and Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ross McCall:

Get married in 2009 and upstage the 2008 nuptials of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, and Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds.

Dare We Say? Mariah to Release a Film in December

Posted on 13 Sep 2008 at 11:58pm

Just when you thought films have hit rock bottom here comes Mariah Carey.

Just seven short years following her biggest career mistake ever – the release of Glitter, a who-in-the-world-thought-that-was-a-good-idea cinematic flop – she’s goin’ back in.

The film, titled Tennessee, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this past spring. No word yet on how it was received.

While I’m not her biggest film fan, I wish her well. She certainly isn’t the worst actress in film (have you SEEN Madonna?) – and it doesn’t take anything away from me for her to fulfill her dream of acting. Go, Mariah, Go!

But in the future, you might want to assure that the script is worthy. As the saying goes, “Don’t give it away—sell it!” I mean that in the most un-prostitutional way imaginable.
