I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t until I became a beauty editor here at Positively Celebrity that I had well kept nails. I always had clean, strong nails but I would rarely go get a manicure and I definitely didn’t experiment with colors. When I moved to the U.S., I discovered that not having a manicure was a crime in the office! In London (where I’m from), manicures and pedicures are really expensive, even just for plain polish. It can cost anywhere from 40 to 120 bucks there! So… it used to be a treat getting my nails done, but now I really have no excuse when there are places to get my nails done for as little as $10!
If you’ve been following my posts, I have done MINX and all kinds of gel and designs. Naja, my nail stylist, basically dresses my nail to the hottest craze at the time. What I love about Naja is she goes by mood. If I go in and I’m super upbeat, she’ll go bold and colorful…and if I’m a little somber and discreet she’ll do my old school favorite OPI ’s “You Don’t Know Jaques”, only $2 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/OPI-Nail-Polish-Dont-Jacques/dp/B001E25G0W
For Halloween, I was a zombie Housewife. I had a super cute costume, but need some cool nails to complete my costume. I texted Naja and asked if there was any way to get the look of blood spattered on my nails. I arrived at her salon and she had spent the day experimenting on her colleague to make sure she got it just right. Being the nail guru that she is, she did the white in gel and the red (blood) in normal polish. Purity by Artistic Colour gloss was the white gel and the blood Essie’s Tomboy no more.
It looked so awesome! Check it out, below.
My nails worked perfectly for my costume, but the day after halloween I would have felt very silly with my nails still dripped with “blood”. That’s when I took the top layer of red polish off in one quick motion, and my white gel was perfectly intact and I got to wear them another 12 days! I absolutely loved being able to get two wears out of one trip to the salon.
I am a big fan of being able to build a few different looks from one manicure. I recently went in to get a bright summer color, so I went with Vivid by Artistic Color Gloss. I’m a Gemini and Naja knows I get bored easily, so after week when I’m over the brightness I could come in and get her very own MINX line which is Black lace and called Johnny.
When it comes to a manicure, there really is a color for every mood , a texture for every taste and a design to blow your mind!
I challenge you to do something new this month. Go for a color you have never tried, give MINX a shot or indulge in 15 days chip free with gel. If you are L.A. based you must have Naja in your address book. She’s moving soon from one fabulous, relaxing location to a new, even more gorgeous and creative salon…but in the meantime you can find Naja Rickette on http://extremedys2012.com/.
