This Week’s Hottest Music News!

Posted on 16 Aug 2010 at 1:39pm

So you couldn’t sneak enough web surfing time at work to stay connected to the fabulous world of music? Here’s what you missed!

Katy Perry debuts new video for single, “Teenage Dream” Just when you thought she was finished releasing hot, summer singles, Katy Perry does it again with “Teenage Dream.” In this sensual video, a group of friends have the time of their lives speeding on winding roads and jumping into the ocean wearing their underwear. A parent’s nightmare but definitely a teenager’s dream.

50’s a “Creep”

At least rapper, Shyne, thinks so.  Disguising his voice, Mr. Cent called up Shyne and asked him what his beef is with 50?  That’s right, Mr. Vitamin Water himself made a “why don’t you like me?” phone call to another rapper. Shyne ridicules 50 in a 3-minute-long video and calls the “Wanksta” rapper a “stalker.” Ummm…yeah. Seems kinda stalkerish to me.

Alternative Band, Every Avenue, premieres new video, “Tell Me I’m A Wreck”

The video starts with images of some pretty depressed looking people who have been dealt an unlucky hand in love. You feel for these people as their stories are illustrated through somber captions and lyrics. The video comes full circle, and by the end, you see lots of people who are happily in love. Simple concept, amazing video. Blame it on the estrogen, but I swear, I was in tears before it was over.

What’s a weekly wrap up without mentioning Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Britney?

Gaga - She dishes to AMP radio that she thinks promiscuity is a bad idea and that it has an adverse affect on her creativity process. In other words, being slutty is out of style. Well, this sounds pretty reasonable to me, and I don’t quite understand why this is trending. In OTHER Gaga news…Her Monsters Ball tour sold out back-to-back nights at Staples in LA.

Taylor Swift – Every song she releases is basically guaranteed a top spot on the charts, and she hit the jackpot again this week with “Mine.” It won’t be long before she’s dominating the hip hop charts, too.

Britney- She’ll put down her Starbucks just long enough to make a guest appearance on Fox’s Glee.  Confirmed by Glee creator, Ryan Murphy, the cast will sing Ms. Spears’s songs as the pop princess appears as a part of their hallucinations.

To Judge or Not to Judge?

In an attempt to remain relevant – which obviously, they’re getting the hint that they aren’t so relevant anymore – American Idol has left America lingering on suspicions of who will make up next season’s judging panel. Jennifer Lopez, Aerosmith’s Steve Tyler, and Shania Twain are all rumored to be possible replacements. So much speculation, so few facts. We do know that Ellen DeGeneres and Simon have bowed out … and we applaud them for jumping off this sinking ship.

And that’s your music wrap up for this week!

Moon Man, Anyone? MTV VMA Noms Announced!

Posted on 05 Aug 2010 at 8:04pm

The only thing better than traveling to the moon is having the coveted moon man statue on your mantle piece.  Yes! MTV has announced the nominees for this year’s best music videos. Check below to see who I think will be taking home the hardware this year!

Best Collaboration

In the best collabo category, we have the heavy weights of hip hop and of pop.  Jay- Z and Alicia Keys with “Empire State of Mind”:

Beyonce and Gaga in “Video Phone”:

and Gaga featuring Beyonce in “Telephone”:

All chart toppers that kept us all rapping, singing, and dancing.  Can the lesser known  B.o.B. with “Airplanes” and 3OH!3 featuring Ke$ha with “My First Kiss” hold their own against the stars?

For the past several months, it seems that everyone has been humming “I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now.” And 3OH!3’s “My First Kiss” is upbeat , energetic, and refreshing.  I’m all about the triumph of the underdog for this category.

My vote: “My First Kiss” by 3OH!3

Best Dance Video

Cascada, Enrique, Usher, Gaga, and David Guetta are battling it out for best dance video of the year.  Remember when dance videos actually had choreography? Think Janet’s “Rhythm Nation” or even Paula Abdul’s “Cold Hearted Snake.” Yeah. Not so much anymore.

Cascada’s “Evacuate the Dance Floor” is a great song, but the video hardly qualifies as a dance video.

After watching all the hot, bangin’ bodies in David Guetta’s “Sexy Chick”, I wanted to diet not dance.

The girls in the video are smoking hot, but again, not so much dancing going on there. Maybe I missed the memo, but can we mandate that a video in this category at least have an eight count of choreography?  Well, I have no choice but to credit the creative one for allowing us a glimpse into her monster world.

My vote: “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga

Best Female Video

Well, hi there, Beyonce and Gaga. These two rock stars show up again in this category with “Video Phone” and “Bad Romance,” respectively.  How do Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok,” Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and Taylor Swift’s “Fifteen”  measure against these divas?

“California Gurls”, with its cutesy, Candy Land theme, could be a contender:

And because “Tik Tok” was such a hit, Ke$ha might be waking up feeling like she has a moon man next to her.

And, no, it’s not the CMAs, but I am diggin’ Taylor Swift’s “Fifteen”:

The song is great, and the video feels like a whimsical fairy tale. The lyrics and visuals make you a bit nostalgic about your own adolescent days, and if a music video has the power to make you think and not just watch, then it gets my vote.

My vote: “Fifteen” by Taylor Swift

Video of the Year

Okay, so Lady Gaga is up against herself with both “Bad Romance” and “Telephone” for Video of the Year.  Because little monsters all over the globe will be voting ‘round the clock to support Gaga, she is bound to win this category.

However, 30 Seconds To Mars really impressed me with their “Kings and Queens” video:

If you live in LA, you probably spent the first couple times watching it and saying, “hey, I recognize that place!” And then you start wondering, “how in the WORLD did they film this video throughout the streets of LA with NO traffic!?!” I mean, really. When is there ever NOT traffic in LA? There’s literally not a stray car seen in the video. Accomplishing that feat alone warrants 30 Seconds To Mars a moon man.

My vote: “Kings and Queens” by 30 Seconds To Mars

American Idol Watch: Paula Abdul – Who knows?

Posted on 25 Aug 2009 at 11:50pm

Rumor has it Paula Abdul has made it official: she will NOT be returning to FOX’s top-rated talent show American Idol.

Sources say producers wanted Abdul to return in a smaller capacity than she was accustomed to – and she refused.

On the other hand, Perez Hilton reports that Abdul will definitely return, but at a lesser pay scale than desired.

Geez/Louise! At this point I’m beginning to wonder if even Paula knows what she’s going to do. And does anyone really care?

Stay tuned. There’s bound to be more as the season hasn’t yet begun.

Positively No Moss Growing Under Paula’s Dancing Feet

Posted on 21 Aug 2009 at 11:15pm

In an apparent move to tap into Paula Abdul’s popularity (and controversial departure from its competitor), ABC producers are vying for Abdul to participate on this season’s Dancing with the Stars.

Stephen McPherson, the network’s programming chief, called Abdul following her departure from FOX’s American Idol. Noting Abdul was “an old friend,” McPherson gave no indication whether Abdul has reached a decision to join DWTS.

Idol Watch: Positively Paula’s Departure

Posted on 11 Aug 2009 at 8:17pm

Since the announcement of Paula Abdul’s departure, the Internet has been inundated with rumors of her ultimate return. But could the latest developments mean the solid end to her Idol run? According to sources, various female pop stars will fill the empty seat left by Adbul, who departed recently over salary negotiations.

Singers Katy Perry and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham have already signed agreements to judge some of the auditions, but live performances don’t air until January. So who knows – Abdul just might get that increased salary she’s looking for. After all, this is American Idol and if you’ve seen the show you know that anything is possible.

Adbul no longer an American Idol

Posted on 08 Aug 2009 at 10:26am

Following weeks of anticipation it’s official: Paula Abdul will NOT be returning to American Idol. Abdul broke the news to her tweets on her Twitter. A judge on the popular singing contest since it began in 2002, supposedly her decision was made firm after negotiations over salary fell through.

Sources say Abdul wanted $20 million to return, while producers were willing to come up with just $10 million. In the meanwhile, host Ryan Seacrest signed a three-year contract worth $45 million, making him the highest paid host on reality TV. Poor, poor Paula. Guess $10 million just doesn’t go as far as it used to.

The Dark Side of Celebrity

Posted on 17 Nov 2008 at 1:56pm

Last week the body of an American Idol wannabe, Goodspeed, was found near the home of Paula Abdul. Since then rumors have been flying, speculating that Goodspeed was obsessed with the AI judge, even changing her birth name (Sandra) to Paula – in honor of Abdul.

Since her 2005 debut on AI, where she was harshly dismissed by judges, Goodspeed sent Adbul over 100 letters, called her numerous times, and even appeared uninvited on occasion. Just before her apparent suicide, Goodspeed sent Abdul a bouquet of flowers with a note containing her new cell number.

Goodspeed’s mother reported her missing days ago and directed police to Abdul’s neighborhood, saying she believed her daughter was suicidal. Police found Goodspeed dead in her car from what they believe was a drug overdose.

Goodspeed’s obsession with Abdul is unmistakable: as if her name change wasn’t a clue, she also has a collection of her own drawings of Abdul. Her personalized license plate reads “ABL LV,” and from her rearview mirror hangs a photo of Abdul herself.

Somehow Goodspeed’s audition, which is all over the Internet since her death, can’t be seen in the same light-hearted manner as it was when she first appeared on the seen. Our hearts should go out to Abdul, Goodspeed and her family at this time.

If Three’s a Crowd, What Do You Call Four?

Posted on 29 Aug 2008 at 12:19am

As if there wasn’t enough banter at the judges table, American Idol goes one better. The new season will introduce a fourth (yes fourth!) judge to add more anxiety for the already over-anxious wannabees.

Sources say Kara DioGuardi will be joining Paula “Say what?” Abdul, Randy “You my dog” Jackson, and Simon “Crusher” Cowell.

While DioGuardi’s name may not be familiar to most of us mere mortals, her influence in the music world is well documented.

Her songs have been recorded by Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Pink, Gwen Stefani, Carrie Underwood and a host of others.

Still, I wonder what characteristics she’ll bring to the table. Literally.
